Rules & Information
General Competition Entry Rules & Guidelines
Competition Terms Overview
Our competitions are judged by an impartial panel of judges, who judge using a centralised criteria designed to eliminate any style or genre bias. We always strive to judge work in its own context.
All submitted work should be free of any identifying information (name, email, website, etc.) and any entries submitting with such information included may be disqualified from placement.
Anonymity must be preserved at all stages of judging and violation of this on the part of the entrant will affect their ability to place.
Brief feedback will be provided for all entrants unless otherwise stated, provided by professional editors and authors, who are paid for their time and expertise. However, due to the subjective nature of writing, entrants are encouraged to take the feedback provided under consideration, but be aware that the provided is opinion, and that Grindstone cannot be held responsible for any success or lack thereof following changes made to the work based on our feedback.
Entrants placing on our long and shortlists may be eligible for publication, depending on the nature of the competition in question. The manner in which it is published is at our sole discretion and we reserve the right to not publish work for any reason we deem fit, in any manner.
Before publication occurs, we will obtain permission from the entrant whose work is in question. If a piece submitted is currently published, or you are a published author, this does not exclude you from a competition, although it does not guarantee success.
We hold no responsibility for plagiarism of work and submission of work which you do not own will be disqualified. All decisions are final and are not available for dispute and cannot be overturned under any circumstances.
All entry fees must be paid in full via PayPal at time of entry. Prize funds will be transferred via PayPal and are subject to PayPal's 'receipt of payment for goods or services' fee (2.9% + $0.30) due to tax requirements. Any entrants who have not paid the entry fee will be immediately disqualified. There is no limit for the number of entries any one individual is allowed to submit, but each individual entry must be paid for with its own entry fee. Entrants are able to submit the same piece more than once if revisions have occurred, but we kindly ask that you get in touch to let us know that this is the case, and no refunds will be provided for the original entry.
Entrants receiving a disbursement from Grindstone in relation to a competition acknowledge that any amount, regardless of its size, is considered personal income, and is thereby subject to taxation. Entrants are required to investigate tax implications in their country of entry, and comply with the regulations in place. Any failure to do so is the sole responsibility of the recipient, and entry to our competitions confirms on the part of the entrant both acknowledgement and acceptance of this statement, and thereby absolves Grindstone Literary Ltd of all legal responsibility and ramifications in relation to the payment of prize funds.
All submissions must be eligible for entry to a competition according to the work's copyright if it is already subject to a copyright agreement. All entries are maintained in our database for the purpose of the 'User Dashboard' and 'My Entries' section in the dashboard. Users/Entrants can remove work from their own dashboards at their discretion, which will also remove it from our database.
By entering a competition at Grindstone, you agree to be added to our mailing list, from which you can unsubscribe at any time using the 'Unsubscribe' link, or by getting in touch.
Grindstone Literary Ltd will not share or pass on any of your personal details, but reserve the right to contact entrants via the email address provided to us at time of entry or registration.

Thanks for the support!
We're continually enamoured by the support and generosity of the writing community, so we just wanted to take a second to say a big thank you to two contributors. Both Almond Press, and Christopher Fielden are kind enough to list our competitions on their sites, and in doing so, help to spread the Grindstone name. They've been instrumental in our growth and success, and we can't thank them enough. Though, we hope this message goes a small way to doing so!
